US dollar

The US Dollar has crossed the LE 53 mark across several local Egyptian commercial banks. This upward movement is driven by a broader global rally of the greenback and intensifying geopolitical anxieties within the Middle East, Al-Mal reported.

Global dynamics fueling the greenback

This domestic shift mirrors a strong international performance by the US currency. According to a report by the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, the US Dollar recently posted its most robust weekly performance in over two months. This global surge is heavily supported by rising US Treasury yields and growing inflationary pressures tied to elevated energy prices. Furthermore, market sentiment is increasingly pricing in a potential interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve in upcoming December meetings.

Fitch Ratings

Concurrently, Fitch Ratings highlighted that Egypt’s flexible exchange rate mechanism has played a vital role in cushioning the domestic economy against massive foreign capital outflows.

According to the credit rating agency, this structural flexibility has significantly bolstered the credibility of the nation’s economic framework. It has also successfully shielded Egypt’s sovereign credit rating—which currently stands at “B” with a Stable Outlook—from the geopolitical fallout of regional conflicts involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

Fitch detailed that the Egyptian Pound has adjusted downward by approximately 10 percent against the US Dollar since late February. This correction followed the exit of over $10 billion in non-resident investments. Crucially, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) refrained from direct market intervention to artificially prop up the currency. By allowing the market to self-correct, the CBE successfully preserved its foreign exchange reserves and effectively mitigated dollarization pressures within the domestic market.
