The free market USD exchange rate has stabilized.

The Japanese yen fell, while the euro showed mixed movements at banks.

The US dollar fell from its 18-month high on Thursday, despite positive US inflation and spending data. The decline came as investors worried about the debt burden of AI companies and sold off data center stocks, driving capital toward US government bonds. Concerns about slowing growth also weighed on the greenback.

US producer prices rose sharply in September, the strongest increase in four and a half years, and retail sales exceeded forecasts, indicating persistent inflationary pressures and robust consumer demand. However, cautious statements from Fed officials have lowered expectations for an interest rate hike in October. According to CME FedWatch, the probability of the Fed keeping interest rates unchanged at its October 27-28 meeting has risen to 73%, up from 53% a month ago.

What should buyers of USD be aware of?

On October 16th, the US dollar weakened slightly in the international market, with some domestic banks also experiencing a decline. Meanwhile, the USD price remained stable in the free market, indicating inconsistent exchange rate movements across different markets. This necessitates caution from investors, who should avoid chasing the upward trend of the US dollar in the international market.

Market monitoring shows that the USD/VND exchange rate is also affected by the supply and demand of foreign currency in the domestic market, the payment needs of businesses, and import and export activities. Therefore, it is not possible to predict a corresponding increase in the domestic USD price based solely on the upward or downward trend of the international USD.

For those needing to buy USD for studying abroad, tourism , business trips, or foreign currency payments, it’s important to clearly define the amount needed and the payment schedule. If you don’t need to buy the entire amount at once, dividing the purchase into smaller installments can help mitigate risks from exchange rate fluctuations. Buyers should also compare USD selling prices between banks and consider the buy-sell spread to choose the most suitable time.

For investors intending to hold USD for profit, the current situation demands greater caution. A decline in the international USD price does not necessarily mean a corresponding decrease in the domestic USD price, and vice versa. The sideways movement in the free market indicates that the downward trend has not spread evenly. If buying at a high price but the domestic exchange rate does not continue to rise, profits may be reduced, or even losses may be incurred when selling due to the difference between buying and selling prices.
