Travelex has strengthened its presence in Australia by opening two new foreign exchange ATMs at Hobart Airport, a move that aligns with the airport’s ambitious expansion plans and rising passenger demand. The latest investment comes as Hobart Airport progresses with a A$200 million redevelopment designed to transform it into a larger international gateway capable of handling more than 3.5 million passengers annually by 2030.
The new facilities have been strategically positioned to improve access to travel money for departing and arriving passengers while supporting the airport’s long-term vision of welcoming new international services across the Asia-Pacific region.
Two new ATMs improve passenger convenience
The newly installed Travelex ATMs are located in two of the airport’s busiest passenger zones. One machine has been placed in the airside departures area, allowing travellers to obtain foreign currency after clearing security, while the second is situated in the landside arrivals area for passengers requiring Australian cash immediately upon arrival.
The airside ATM dispenses Australian dollars, US dollars, New Zealand dollars and Indonesian rupiah, providing travellers with access to several of the region’s most commonly used currencies. The arrivals ATM supplies Australian dollars, ensuring inbound passengers can easily access local currency without leaving the terminal.
The expansion reflects Travelex’s strategy of increasing the accessibility of travel money services at key Australian transport hubs while responding to growing international travel demand.
Hobart Airport prepares for significant growth
The new Travelex facilities arrive at a pivotal moment for Hobart Airport as it undertakes one of the largest infrastructure projects in its history.

The airport is investing approximately A$200 million to modernise and expand its terminal, with the redevelopment expected to double the size of the existing terminal footprint by 2027. The larger facility is intended to accommodate rising passenger volumes while creating additional retail, hospitality and passenger service opportunities.
Passenger numbers are forecast to climb steadily over the coming years, with annual traffic expected to exceed 3.5 million by 2030.

Alongside the terminal redevelopment, Hobart Airport has completed a major runway upgrade capable of accommodating widebody aircraft. This enhancement opens the possibility of launching nonstop international services to destinations across Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong, in the coming years.
The combination of expanded terminal capacity and upgraded aviation infrastructure positions Hobart Airport to play a greater role in Australia’s international aviation network.
Travelex strengthens its Australian network
Travelex says the Hobart Airport expansion forms part of its broader strategy to grow its Australian estate and support evolving passenger requirements.
Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, Asokan Sathurayar, said the company was pleased to support Hobart Airport’s transformation while expanding access to travel money services for both current and future travellers.

He noted that the airport’s world-class terminal and runway developments create an opportunity for Travelex to serve increasing passenger numbers, particularly as new international connections to Asian destinations become available.
The additional airport locations further reinforce Travelex’s position as one of Australia’s leading foreign exchange providers, serving travellers through airport outlets, retail stores and automated foreign currency services.
Long-standing commitment to Tasmania
The latest expansion builds upon Travelex’s presence across Tasmania spanning more than two decades.
The company first established operations in the state by opening a bureau within a Helloworld Travel agency in Launceston, Tasmania’s second-largest city, over 20 years ago.
Its investment continued in 2024 with the launch of a dedicated retail store at Eastlands Shopping Centre, Hobart’s largest shopping destination. The outlet allows customers to purchase foreign currency either in person or through an online click-and-collect service before travelling overseas.
Beyond its own retail network, Travelex also supports more than 100 Australia Post outlets throughout Tasmania by providing foreign exchange cash services, significantly expanding access to travel money across the state.

The addition of airport facilities complements this wider network and provides travellers with multiple options for obtaining foreign currency before or during their journey.
Australians continue to plan travel spending ahead
Consumer behaviour also supports the expansion of airport foreign exchange services.
According to the 2026 Travelex Travel Money Insight report, almost half of Australian travellers prefer to obtain their travel money at least one month before departure.
This trend suggests travellers remain focused on budgeting ahead of overseas holidays and business trips while seeking convenient and flexible access to foreign currency through both retail locations and airport services.
The combination of physical stores, click-and-collect options and airport ATMs allows travellers to choose the method that best suits their travel plans.
Airport redevelopment focuses on customer experience
Hobart Airport believes the arrival of additional Travelex facilities complements its wider objective of improving the passenger journey as part of the ongoing redevelopment.

Chief Financial and Commercial Officer Kate Gillies said the expanded Travelex presence represents another important milestone in delivering a more convenient and customer-focused airport experience.
She explained that the enlarged terminal is being designed to provide passengers with greater choice, enhanced services and the modern facilities expected from an expanding international gateway. As the airport prepares for millions more passengers over the coming years, additional travel services such as foreign exchange are expected to become increasingly important.
The partnership between Hobart Airport and Travelex reflects how infrastructure investment and passenger services are evolving together. As Tasmania’s primary aviation gateway expands its capacity and prepares for future international connectivity, improved access to travel money will form an essential part of the airport experience. With new terminal facilities, upgraded aviation infrastructure and stronger passenger services arriving simultaneously, Hobart Airport is positioning itself for sustained tourism growth while offering travellers a smoother and more convenient journey from departure to arrival.
