Apr. 11—SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Chief Rob Kohli of the Shawnee Township Police Department is warning area businesses and residents to be on alert following reports that counterfeit currency is being circulated.
Kohli said reports have come from several businesses indicating that counterfeit paper currency in a wide range of currencies has been discovered. Kohli said the bills “look pretty good” and have been found to be in denominations ranging from $10 and $20 up to $50 bills.
“They have been used a lot for fairly small purchases, such as ice cream,” the chief said.
He urged business owners to be vigilant and check bills based on a number of safeguards, including magnetic strips, colored fibers and holographic images that are evident when bills are held up against a light.
He also warned residents who may be holding garage sales or selling items online to be particularly aware.
“If you come across a counterfeit bill, please retain it and contact the Police Department immediately at 419-227-1115. Also, if possible, please attempt to gather detailed information of the individual who gave you the bill; including vehicle description/license plate info,” Kohli said.
