Dollar steady ahead of Fed Chair remarks, underpinned by higher US yields

The dollar held firm against major currencies on Thursday and gained against more volatile ones, underpinned by the U.S. 10-year yield nearing the 5% level and before remarks by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at a discussion on the economy.

The dollar index, which tracks the unit against six main peers, was at 106.5 steady on the day, having risen 0.33% on Wednesday.

Its moves were more dramatic against currencies that are particularly exposed to swings in global growth expectations, with the Australian dollar and New Zealand dollars each down as much as 0.6%. The New Zealand currency hit its lowest level in a year of $0.5815.

Tech View: Nifty trading near 50-DMA. What traders should do on Friday

Nifty today ended 46 points lower to form a small green candle with an upper shadow on the daily chart and signalled buying interest at lower levels. Put writers were seen strengthening their position at 19,500 strike.

If the index weakens further, it can find support around 19480-19450 levels and any upside bounce from here could encounter resistance around 19700 levels. A decisive break above this hurdle could pull Nifty towards another hurdle of 19850 levels, said Nagaraj Shetti, Technical Research Analyst, HDFC Securities.

Stock Market LIVE Updates: RBI likely offering US dollars to defend rupee

The Reserve Bank of India is likely selling U.S. dollars again to defend the rupee and keep it from sliding to a record low, three traders told Reuters on Thursday.

The rupee was at 83.2650 against the dollar, little changed from its close at 83.2575 in the previous session. The rupee, aided by the RBI, held its ground despite weakness in most Asian currencies and higher U.S. yields.

The RBI’s intervention “was expected”, a foreign exchange trader at a private bank said.

09:24:48 AM IST, 19 October 2023

Morning view by Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

The market responds to economic headwinds more than geopolitical tensions. From that perspective, the sustained rise in US bond yields is becoming a major challenge for the mother market of the US, and thereby, for global markets. The market had not positioned for the US 10-year bond yield at 4.95 % and, therefore, this unexpected spike in yields will take its toll on equity markets. It is important to understand that the spike in bond yields is not due to monetary factors alone.

The fiscal situation characterised by high deficit in the US is also contributing to the rise in yields via increased supply of bonds. So, this combination of fiscal and monetary factors pushing bond yields up will pose a major challenge to equity markets. FPIs will continue to sell, impacting the markets. Financials, though fundamentally strong, are likely to face more selling pressure since the major part of FPI’s AUM is in financials, particularly leading banks.

Long-term investors can capitalise on the decline in banking stocks triggered by FPI selling, through a calibrated accumulation strategy. This segment is doing well and the valuations are fair, even attractive.

Dalal Street grapples with uncertainty as global leaders work to prevent a potential Middle East ground war triggered by Israel’s contemplation of retaliatory action following a Hamas terrorist attack. Iran’s threats have heightened tension, causing significant volatility in the benchmark Nifty. Given these developments, a cautious investment approach is advised. Specific trading recommendations include selling Nifty at the current market price with a stop at 19,907, targeting 19,507, 19,300, and more aggressive goals at 18,900. Selling Bank Nifty at the current market price with a stop at 44,701, targeting 43,600, 43,000, and more aggressive targets at 41,750 to 42,000. Investors face various pressing concerns, including divestment by Foreign Institutional Investors, the Israel-Palestine conflict, lacklustre corporate performance, rising US Treasury yields, expected Federal Reserve rate hikes, and an upcoming speech by Jerome Powell. Nifty and Bank Nifty also face technical challenges, contributing to the prevailing uncertainty. Monitoring Jerome Powell’s speech is vital for insights into the central bank’s future actions.
