Travelex, one of the world’s leading foreign exchange service providers, has expanded its presence at Hobart Airport in Tasmania, Australia, with the launch of two new currency exchange ATM locations to support the airport’s future passenger growth.
The newly installed ATMs have been strategically placed in key passenger areas, with one located in the airside departures zone and the other in the landside arrivals area. The new facilities are designed to provide greater convenience for travellers as Hobart Airport moves towards handling an expected 3.5 million passengers by 2030.
The expansion comes as Hobart Airport continues its major $200 million terminal redevelopment project, which will significantly increase the airport’s terminal capacity and double its existing footprint by 2027. The infrastructure upgrade aims to improve passenger facilities, enhance operational efficiency and prepare the airport for rising domestic and international travel demand.
Hobart Airport’s recent runway enhancement has also strengthened its ability to accommodate larger widebody aircraft, opening opportunities for future direct international connections. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to support potential nonstop services to major Asian markets, including Singapore and Hong Kong, in the coming years, further improving Tasmania’s global connectivity.
“Travelex is proud to expand its Australian estate and build on its legacy in Tasmania by supporting Hobart Airport’s world class terminal and runway transformation. Our expanded estate will enable us to conveniently serve the growing number of passengers requiring access to travel money, including future Asian destinations,” said Asokan Sathurayar, Managing Director, Australia and New Zealand, Travelex.
Travelex has expanded its foreign exchange services at Hobart Airport, introducing new ATM facilities across departures and arrivals areas to make travel money more accessible for passengers. The expansion provides travellers with greater convenience by allowing them to access essential currencies before and after international journeys while supporting Hobart Airport’s ongoing efforts to improve passenger experiences.

The newly introduced airside departures ATM allows departing passengers to withdraw multiple major travel currencies, including Australian dollars, US dollars, New Zealand dollars and Indonesian rupiah. The service gives international travellers greater flexibility by providing quick access to foreign currency after completing airport security procedures.
In addition, Travelex has launched a landside arrivals ATM, enabling passengers returning to Tasmania to access Australian dollars upon arrival. The facility is designed to support travellers who require immediate access to local currency for transport, accommodation, shopping or other essential expenses after completing their journey.
The latest development highlights Travelex’s continued commitment to strengthening its presence across Tasmania. The company first established operations in the state more than 20 years ago, opening its first Tasmanian location in the central business district of Launceston, Tasmania’s second-largest city. The initial operation was introduced through a bureau partnership located within leading travel agency Helloworld Travel, providing local residents with access to foreign exchange services before overseas trips.
Over the years, Travelex has continued expanding its network to meet the changing needs of Tasmanian travellers. In 2024, the company introduced a new store at Eastlands Shopping Centre in Hobart, the largest shopping centre in the city. The location created a convenient option for residents to arrange travel money before departure, offering both in-person foreign currency services and digital solutions through online ordering and click-and-collect facilities.
Beyond dedicated stores, Travelex has also increased accessibility through its partnership network. The company supports more than 100 Australia Post outlets across Tasmania, allowing customers in different communities to access foreign exchange cash services closer to home. This wider network ensures that travellers outside major urban centres can also prepare their travel money before international departures.
The expansion arrives at a time when Australians continue to prioritise early travel preparation. According to the 2026 Travelex Travel Money Insight report, almost half of Australians surveyed prefer to arrange their travel money one month or more before travelling overseas. The findings indicate that many travellers value planning ahead and securing currency solutions before reaching airports or foreign destinations.

As international travel demand continues to evolve, convenient access to foreign currency remains an important part of the overall passenger journey. Airports are increasingly focusing on providing seamless services that reduce travel stress and improve the customer experience, from check-in and security processes to retail, dining and financial services.
For Hobart Airport, the arrival of expanded Travelex facilities forms part of a broader strategy to enhance airport operations and passenger services. The airport is currently undergoing a significant $200 million terminal redevelopment project, designed to modernise facilities, improve passenger flow and support future growth in domestic and international travel.
Hobart Airport Chief Financial and Commercial Officer Kate Gillies said Travelex’s expanded presence represented another important step in improving the airport experience for travellers. The new services complement the airport’s wider redevelopment programme by providing passengers with additional convenience and greater access to essential travel services.
With international travel continuing to recover and more passengers seeking smooth and efficient journeys, Travelex’s expanded foreign exchange facilities at Hobart Airport strengthen Tasmania’s travel infrastructure. The development supports both local residents preparing for overseas trips and international visitors arriving in the state, creating a more connected and traveller-friendly airport experience.
“By doubling our terminal space and creating capacity for millions more passengers in the years ahead, we are focused on providing travellers with greater convenience, more choice and the services they expect from a modern gateway,” Ms Gillies said.
